Manhattan

Manhattan is universally recognized as one of the world's art capitals — home to the blue-chip powerhouses of Chelsea alongside smaller spaces scattered across SoHo and the Upper East Side. With this many galleries in one borough, it's easy to walk past a dozen without ever knowing they're there.

Brooklyn

Brooklyn might be the hippest place in the US, and its gallery scene sits just across the river from Manhattan's — yet it gets overlooked constantly. It's close enough to visit in the same afternoon, but far enough that most people never think to.

Queens

Queens has nearly as many galleries as Brooklyn, though it almost never gets mentioned in the same breath. It's one of the clearest examples of a real scene hiding in plain sight.

The Bronx

The Bronx doesn't have the gallery-scene reputation of the other boroughs, but it shouldn't be overlooked — there's a genuine, active scene here for anyone paying attention.

Staten Island

Staten Island barely registers in this directory — just two listings, the Staten Island Museum and the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, and neither is really a commercial gallery. If Staten Island has a gallery scene, this map hasn't found much of one yet.

How to use this map

The map at the top of this page plots every gallery we track. A green marker means that gallery has posted a new show in the past week; a grey marker means no change since our last check. Use the borough buttons to narrow the map to Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Staten Island, or scroll down to browse the full directory as a list. Tapping any gallery — on the map or in the list — brings up its address and a link to its own website.

Most NYC galleries are free to visit

One thing that surprises a lot of first-time visitors: commercial art galleries are almost always free, and you don't need a ticket, an appointment, or any intention to buy. You can walk in, look around for as long or as little as you like, and walk out again — that's completely normal, and it's how the galleries themselves expect most people to use them. Unlike museums, there's no admission and rarely a crowd, which makes an afternoon of gallery-hopping one of the best free things to do in New York.

When to go

Galleries typically open new exhibitions with a reception on a Thursday evening, when several in a neighborhood stay open late and the streets get lively — a good time to go if you like a bit of atmosphere. For a quieter visit, weekday and weekend afternoons are ideal. Hours vary, and many galleries close on Sundays and Mondays, so it's worth checking a gallery's own website (linked from its listing here) before making a special trip.

Finding the ones you'd never notice

Plenty of New York's galleries hide on upper floors, behind plain doors, or on blocks you would never think to look — which is exactly why this map exists. Filter to your borough, see what's nearby, and you'll likely find a space or two you have walked past without ever realizing it was there. That is the whole idea: a little less art hiding in plain sight.
