Art Galleries in SoHo, Manhattan
SoHo was the epicenter of the New York art world in the 1970s and '80s, and after decades as a shopping district, galleries have been steadily returning to its cast-iron streets.

About the SoHo gallery scene
This is where the modern gallery scene was effectively invented: dealers like Leo Castelli and a generation of artists who took over cheap industrial lofts turned SoHo into the center of contemporary art before Chelsea existed. The galleries largely left in the 1990s as luxury retail moved in, but the cast-iron architecture and the history remained.
In recent years galleries have come back, sharing the neighborhood with flagship stores and design showrooms, which makes SoHo one of the more browsable districts in the city: art, architecture, and window-shopping on the same walk. These are the SoHo galleries we currently track.
