About art galleries in Brooklyn

Where Manhattan's galleries can feel polished and commercial, Brooklyn's tend to be scrappier, cheaper to run, and closer to the artists themselves. The energy is concentrated in a few districts: Bushwick, with its dense sprawl of artist-run project spaces; Williamsburg, the original Brooklyn art hub; and DUMBO, where galleries and non-profits cluster under the bridges. Greenpoint, Bed-Stuy, and Gowanus round out a scene that keeps spreading as rents shift.

Because so many Brooklyn spaces are run by working artists and small collectives, the shows here often take more risks than their Manhattan counterparts, and the neighborhoods reward wandering. Weekend afternoons are the easiest time to visit, and events like Bushwick's open-studio weekends throw open dozens of doors at once.

Below is every Brooklyn gallery we track, mapped and grouped by neighborhood so you can plan a route across the borough.
