About the Chelsea gallery scene
If you visit one gallery district in New York, make it Chelsea. Within a few walkable blocks you'll find the flagship spaces of the industry's biggest names, Gagosian, Pace, David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, Gladstone, and Matthew Marks among them, alongside dozens of mid-size and specialist galleries. Shows rotate roughly every six weeks and are free to walk into; many feel closer to museum exhibitions than sales rooms.
The neighborhood grew up alongside the High Line, the elevated park that threads through it, and the two pair naturally: an afternoon can easily combine a stroll above with a dozen gallery visits below. Openings cluster on Thursday evenings, when the streets fill and galleries stay open late. Don't be put off by the polished interiors, no one expects you to buy, and browsing is the whole point.
