About the Lower East Side gallery scene
Historically a dense immigrant neighborhood, the LES became an art destination as small galleries opened in former storefronts along Orchard, Henry, Broome, and Canal Streets. The spaces here are typically compact and independent, and they tend to show emerging and mid-career artists before the bigger uptown galleries catch on, which makes the neighborhood one of the best places in the city to see what's next.
Everything is tightly packed and walkable, so you can see a dozen shows in an afternoon and still have time for the neighborhood's cafes and bars. These are the Lower East Side galleries we track.
